The Dystopian is a new online magazine looking to find its voice in the already crowded ‘futurism’ niche. The challenge was to develop a visual identity that declared intentions while clearly differentiating itself. Audience identification was the crucial first aim, the need for visual appeal stressed from the get-go.
This is a magazine for thinkers and creators with a big toe in the art world so imagery needed to connect with a certain sensibility. Custom illustrations were geared towards general themes and focused into a Manifesto page.
Too many so-called magazines seem to limit their device readability. so one of the core essentials was for the articles to be fully accessible across an array of mobile devices. This was a challenge given the visual complexity so the need was so keep the whole thing ‘stupidly’ simple at its core.
